2008 Ford Ranger
I bought my first small truck in 1985. It was actually my first new vehicle. I was 20 years old and the truck I bought was a 1986 Mazda B2000. It was a great truck. I owned it for about 2-1/2 years and put about 60,000 miles on it without any problems. It was good on gas and although it lacked power, it was fun to drive. It felt strudy and I was able to haul around furniture, bikes and anything else needed.
After a few years and a growing family, it was time for me to sell the truck. I held off as long as possible, but 2 car payments at that time was not an option for me. I finally sold it and bought a Mazda 323 wagon (also a really great car!).

B2000 - Not my old truck, but similar (mine was gold in color)
Now that the kids are grown, I have been looking at trucks again. It would be great to have a small truck that could double as a back-up commute car when needed. What became painfully obvious is that there are not many options:
Tacoma – now mid-size. Expensive and not very attractive. V6 uses too much gas.
Frontier – now mid-size. 4 cylinder seems too weak for the size of the truck, V6 uses too much gas
Canyon/Colorado – Now mid-size. Weak engines, high prices
The only true small truck is the Ford Ranger. Unfortunately it is basically the same truck that Ford brought out in the 80s! I could live with that, but pricing on these trucks are nearly as much as the mid-size trucks from Toyota and Nissan.
I truly believe there still is a market for small trucks. 4 cylinder (a deisel option would be nice). Regular cab and extended cab (no double cab needed!). body on frame. 2wd/4wd. Basic options such as AC, PW, PDL and a basic stereo system, thats it. Build it right and they will come.
So here is my call out…. Ford, Mazda, Toyota, Nissan… and maybe even Hyundai. Please consider building a small truck for the masses. Small trucks are not dead, unless you kill them off.
